Home backup batteries and transfer switch basics

Why a transfer switch or inlet matters
Ready.gov's generator advice is to connect appliances with heavy-duty extension cords. Feeding a house panel requires a proper transfer device so your backup source cannot feed the grid. Manufacturers sell or support these devices for their home-backup units:
- EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3: supports EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 2 (up to 3 units, 20 ms switch-over, up to 12 circuits), an Inlet Box via the NEMA L14-30R outlet, or a Manual Transfer Switch. EcoFlow notes Smart Home Panel 2 "requires installation before use".
- Anker SOLIX F3800 Plus: connects to Anker's Home Power Panel, a Transfer Switch or an Inlet Box. The page offers a Home Power Panel installation service.
- Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus: Jackery's product page lists a Smart Transfer Switch option covering up to 12 circuits at 120 V or 6 at 240 V (5040 Wh LiFePO4, 7200 W continuous, 14400 W surge, 120/240 V, NEMA L14-30R/14-50 outlet). Some bundles on that page showed "Sold Out" on 2026-10-25, so check availability on the page.

Planning checklist before calling an electrician
- List the circuits you want backed up (fridge, furnace blower, well pump, lights).
- Check whether you need 240 V (well pumps and central AC often do; check the appliance label).
- Compare starting watts with the unit's surge spec.
- Decide: manual transfer switch, inlet box, or the brand's smart panel.
- Ask about permits and local code. Do not back-feed through an outlet. OSHA's portable generator guidance says never to attach a generator directly to a building's electrical system unless a qualified electrician has installed it with a transfer switch, because back-feeding "can energize wiring systems for great distances" and risks electrocuting utility workers. The same principle is why the manufacturers above route home connections through a panel, transfer switch or inlet.
